A Small Miracle In The Locker Room

We all dread a "one in a million fluke" that we did not plan for. One happened to me yesterday at the swimming pool. I swam my normal 1.5 hours. I had a shower and got cleaned up. I went to get my swim trunks to get the key that opens my locker. (For years I have used a strong safety pin to affix the key to my trunks. It has never failed me.) When I looked at my swimming trunks I saw a sight that made me cringe. The safety pen was open and my lock key was missing. People in the locker room suggested that I go back out and look for it. I saw little hope of finding the key because I had been swimming in water 12 feet deep. I went to get the bolt cutters. I fought hard to cut the lock off the locker. It was made of hardened steel and would not budge. (I later found out that one can use super cold air to break such a lock and I will not go into details here.) I feared that I was facing a $60-$200 bill to get a locksmith to come out and take it off my locker.

My father always gave me his most beloved saying as follows: "Son when you're surrounded by 7 big, mean and angry men and all looks hopeless; keep your mouth shut and your eyes and your ears open. God will always provide."

God provided for me in this crisis. A man who had been swimming in the lane with me came up to me and showed me a key. He asked me if it was mine. I put it in my lock and it opened.

What a miracle!!!!

"I Miss The Hungry Years"

Elena and I went by the clinic where she worked over ten years ago as a medical assistant. It is Ravenswood Health Center in East Palo Alto. Little has changed in the last decade except they added a garden. It brought back some nice memories for both of us. It was a time when we were poor and struggling to reach big goals. Neil Sedaka once did a song talking about missing the hungry days. He meant the days when one was poor and struggling. Helen Reddy also did a song that applies when you reach your goals as follows:"Is that all there is..if that's all there is my friend then let's keep dancing." When you reach the top of Mount Everest, it's a great rush for a minute or two. Then you wonder if it was all worth it. I understand what Buzz Aldrin felt like when he came back from walking on the moon at age 39.

Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact-Transmitting Power Wirelessly

Elena hates all of the cables that must be used to keep our high-technology society going. She dreams of the day when power will be transmitted by Bluetooth and the cables can go away. I am the real technology fan in the house. I thought that we were years away from such science fiction magic. Then I got a pleasant surprise. Elena has a huge problem is the part of our bedroom where her dresser is. It is very dark early in the morning. She cannot see properly to pick out her clothes to go to work. We decided to install an over head light. We called upon the excellent electrician who has worked with us a longtime-Alfredo Cruz of Franmore Electric here in Pacifica. He came out Thursday afternoon and did a careful survey. His conclusions were that a standard overhead light would not work there. We had an odd shaped low roof in that area. Then he came up with a proposal that was literally "thinking outside the box." He proposed installing a wireless power source to get power to a lamp. It would be controlled by a wireless switch. After he gave me more details, I approved his proposal and asked him to order the equipment. So now I know that electrical power can be transmitted by wireless means for very short distances. The time will come when power will be transmitted for long distances wirelessly. Science Fiction had become science Fact.
