This
afternoon I shall accept delivery of a 2021 Tesla Model X SUV. My old car has
been with me for 16 years. Elena wanted a vehicle that we can use for long road
trips. She wanted a plug-in hybrid. I countered that I wanted to get away from
fossil fuels. She agreed. She specified that we had to find an electric vehicle
with a 400-mile range. The Tesla comes in at 371 miles range. We will be able
to travel in comfort as will the dogs. This vehicle goes 0-60 miles per hour in
4 seconds. Its top speed is 155 miles per hour. It is a very advanced computer
on wheels.
This brings to mind a time almost 100
years ago-the wild 1920's. In Britain and the US, if you had the money, you
bought a touring car. It had a V-12 engine. It was a convertible with three
rows of seats that allowed an entire family to travel. Gasoline stations were
few and far between. One had to have a large fuel tank. Roads ranged from bad
to horrible. The vehicle had to be tough. You needed a large trunk to hold all
the family's luggage.
My grandfather was part of this travel
revolution. He owned several road houses in Kentucky and Ohio. After a long day
of travel over jarring roads, you came to one of his hotels. You were given a
clean and nice room for the night. A home-cooked meal was provided in the
dining room. Alcohol was prohibited by law. Nonetheless, a tired traveler could
enjoy a selection of wines, beers, whiskeys, and his special 186-proof
moonshine that he prepared on his own still. A lonely male traveler could have
a beautiful woman keep him company for the night. Everything was done with
style and grace without being pretentious. It is predicted that after the
pandemic ends, we will have "The Roaring Twenties" again with
economic prosperity and lots of fun. I hope so.
