Dear Joao, Djenane,Clara,Anna,Elena,Andy, Fabiano, Khossrow, Barbara and Pedro:
All of you have a copy of my poetry book, Poems On The Road. One poem in the book is "Danang Afternoon". It is about a F-100 pilot who is returning to base after completing his last combat mission. The pilot was very happy and decides to do a barrel roll over the runways before he lands. As he was doing his barrel roll, one of his wings snaps off due to metal fatigue. He crashed to the ground and is killed in a split second.
Last night The Military Channel did a program on the F-100 Super Sabre fighter. Much to my surprise, they mentioned that several F-100's had been lost over Vietnam when wings snapped off due to metal fatigue. I felt vindicated.
The show failed to mention F-100's stationed at Danang where I was. It also erroneously said that the last F-100 left Vietnam in July, 1971. We still had some F-100's at Danang in September, 1971.
