Today Elena expended incredible energy
starting to get our pantry back in order after the painting process. We found a
lot of food that had expired over 2 years ago. It had to be disposed of. Elena
also encountered a cylindrical white barrel. It is full of 6- month’s supply of
dried foods. It will last for decades. The various cultures that I have been in
contact with during my life have had an influence on me. A lot of you know that
I have a special place in my heart for Russians, Jewish people, Chinese, And
Brasilians. Please allow me to add to that list Mormons. Yes, they are
politically-conservative. Yes, they have strong religious beliefs. They do not
try to force their beliefs or political ideology on others. They are genuinely
nice people. Their religion has endured oppression and harassment by those in
authority. They know what hard times are about. They also believe in protecting
their family from hard times. They keep a six-month supply of food in their
homes or apartments. This is not literally food that we use every day. It is
dehydrated or deeply-frozen food. I agree with this mindset. A book that
profoundly influenced my life is Harrison Salisbury's The 900 Days. It is about
the Nazi/Finnish siege of the city of Leningrad during World War II. It has
several disturbing chapters describing in intricate detail people suffering
from and dying from starvation. The author also talks about cannibalism.
Elena made one insightful comment about the ugly white cylinder as
follows:
"If we ever have to open that barrel,
society as we know it will be gone."
