50 years ago today three men made a brilliant and daring escape from Alcatraz. I went out to the prison and looked at all of the details. Their home made raft was found over on Angel Island that is right next door to Alcatraz Island. Some footprints were also found there. Conventional wisdom was that the three men swam for San Francisco. That would have kept them int he water a long time and put them at risk of being caught in a current that would pull them out to sea. I believe that they went over to Angel Island and were met by a helper who gave them clothes and money. While a massive search was going on with helicopters and Coast Guard ships they got on the Angel Island ferry and went to San Francisco and then vanished to Latin America. It's interesting that all three men were studying Spanish while in Alcatraz.
Life takes us in many strange directions and wonderful discoveries. It never turns out the way we thought it would.
