The lights at the completed Soccer City stadium were turned on for the first time on Tuesday night.

Building the 90 000-seat 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup stadium in Soweto required 90 000 m³ of concrete, about 10 000 t of reinforcement steel, nine-million bricks and 13 000 t of structural steel.

The structure has a double layer of fabric roof and required 32 400 fibre-cement panels to complete the calabash-inspired design of the façade.

It took some 9 980 000 hours to wrap up the construction of Soccer City, since the project’s inception in 2007.

The stadium, built by the Grinaker-LTA/Interbeton joint venture, will host the opening and final matches of the global soccer spectacular.
