A Normal Man

Yesterday Elena and I went to see an old friend who had just moved into a condominium (sectional title house) that he had proudly purchased. The new property fit his personality and had his mark all over it. We were glad to see him now a homeowner and happy.

All we hear right now is doom and gloom. There is massive unemployment. Many highly-skilled people cannot find jobs. There are all sorts of horror stories about people reaching the end of their unemployment benefits and facing the prospects of living on the streets. Thousands of people are being ejected from their homes. People are losing medical insurance and going bankrupt with medical bills. (Our dear friend told us the sad story of a next door neighbor who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She immediately was fired from her job and lost her health insurance. She defeated cancer but is going broke and almost out of unemployment benefits. While he talked about this sad story, another friend came by. He told us about his struggles to find a new job.)

It was such a wonderful surprise to see a normal man with a job, good health, and enough optimism about the future to invest his life savings in a home. There are other people like him around. We just never hear about them. Why not?
