The 1970's Television Series UFO

I am a real fan of science fiction. I often love these obscure television series and movies that a lot of people missed. I am watching all 26 episodes of UFO now. It was on from 1970-1971 or 1973; depending on who you talk to. It was the first time that Gerry Anderson ventured out of the realm of puppets to do a series with human actors. The writing was superb. The acting was competent. It is a real treat to watch. Now I see the good news thaye are going to produce a full-length movie based on this series.

VFX Veteran to Direct Adaptation of ‘UFO’

24 July 2009 6:30 AM, PDT | From The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news

Variety is reporting that veteran visual effects supervisor Matthew Gratzner (Hancock, Iron Man, Alien: Resurrection) will be making his directorial debut on an adaptation of the 1970s British TV series, UFO.

Like the original Gerry Anderson series, the film will revolve around Shado (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert military operation hidden beneath a Hollywood studio. Shado operatives continually battle an alien race that are kidnapping and killing humans for body parts.

“The story, characters and situations Mr. Anderson created in ‘UFO’ are timeless and engaging,” Gratzner said. “My vision is to utilize visual effects as a supportive storytelling device that draws audiences into this universe.”

Ambitious sci-fi series, 15 July 1999
Author: Rosabel from Ottawa, Canada
I watched this show as a child in Canada, and I remember it fondly. It was very ambitious in its reach - the anti-alien organization had at its disposal a moon base, space craft, special land mobiles and a submarine that could also launch a manned aircraft! This involved lots of models and special effects, and was very exciting at the time. I also enjoyed the personal life conflicts of the characters in the series; the show was not just an endless series of explosions and chases, it tried for a more serious, complex approach. It's funny now to look at the odd clothes worn and bizarre hairdos (including purple wigs as part of the uniform of the female personnel on the moon base!) but the show was meant to be taking place 10 years in the future, so it is possible that the unusual costuming was meant to add an exotic, futuristic atmosphere.
