While Companies And People Lose Their Livelihoods A Gun Shp Thrives

While Companies And People Lose Their Livelihoods A Gun Shop Thrives
In this strange world of lockdown it is odd what businesses are allowed to stay open. Near the house we have City Arms. It is a gun store. It has been part of Pacifica for decades. Elena was walking the dogs yesterday afternoon. She walked by the store. She saw a long line of people lining up to buy guns. She found this disturbing.
I pointed out to her that people are frightened that all social order will break down. They will need a gun or guns to protect their home and family from marauding gangs of looters and desperate starving people. People in Argentina have experience with the breakdown of social order and grievous economic crisis. When this happens, mobs attack retail stores and warehouses emptying them of their goods. They do not, for example, start breaking into homes and apartments to rob them. In the US if there is a violent storm, fire, or earthquake, groups of looters come out and rob houses. These houses are always vacant.
Let us try to imagine that the coronavirus got out of hand and killed millions in the US. There might not be enough police, national guard, and army around to protect citizens. Supply chains would collapse. Forget getting any food, medicine, etc. This is an apocalyptic scenario out of some movie. It is sad to see people get so panicked and terrified that they are lining up at the gun store and risking infection just to have a gun.
My father declined to own a gun. It was a family tradition passed down from my grandmother. I shall leave you with a pearl of wisdom my father gave me sixty years ago:
"Son a gun will get you in more trouble than it will ever get you out of."
